The Sierra Sportsmen Club is a membership club devoted to gun safety and firearm-related sports. It is a registered National Rifle Association (NRA), California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), and Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) club. It is a member in good standing with the U.S. Army, Dept. of Civilian Marksmanship program. Sierra Sportsmen Club has an agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to operate and maintain a plot of land known as the Rice Canyon Range, at 478-505 Brier Patch Road (off Rice Canyon Road), for the purpose of providing access to shooting sports for the populace in Lassen County. We have a fully operational range at the Rice Canyon Range that includes firing lines for 50 foot, 25, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 800-yard burms. There is a pistol range and a Cowboy Action Shooting range. A Trap range with a Skeet range is also available for use. There are 3 out buildings, toilets, and a public parking area. The Sierra Sportsmen Club runs different shooting disciplines that are open to the public almost every weekend from late April (early May depending on the weather) through October. Some of the disciplines include: CMP High Power Rifle Shoots, Junior shoots for the younger shooters, Ladies Shoots, Cowboy Action Shoots (for both men and women) under SASS guidelines, Trap Shoots, Pistol Shoots, Silhouette shoots for black and smokeless powder And much more. The CMP was created by the U.S. Congress. The original purpose was to provide civilians an opportunity to learn and practice marksmanship skills so they would be skilled marksmen if later called on to serve the U.S. military. Over the years the emphasis of the program shifted to focus on youth development through marksmanship. From 1916 until 1996 the CMP was administered by the U.S. Army. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1996 (TITLE XVI) created the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice & Firearms Safety, Inc. (CPRPFS) to take over administration and promotion of the CMP. The CPRPFS is a tax exempt not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that derives its mission from public law.
